SPS8. Students will determine relationships among force, mass, and motion.
a. Calculate velocity and acceleration. b. Apply Newton’s three laws to everyday situations by explaining the following: Inertia Relationship between force, mass and acceleration Equal and opposite forces c. Relate falling objects to gravitational force d. Explain the difference in mass and weight. e. Calculate amounts of work and mechanical advantage using simple machines. Essential Question(s): How is force related to motion? How do unbalanced forces affect motion? Why do objects in motion stay in motion? Monday: Post Test for Escolar. Pre Test for Force, Mass and Motion Unit. Tuesday: Post Newton's Laws in the room. Set up different stations around the classroom so that students can discover Newton's Laws and apply them. Stations: house of cards, arm wrestling, hot wheels cars, textbooks on cloth, bouncing balls, etc. Students will need to define each law and create a 3 column chart describing an activity for each law that demonstrated the law and how it did so. Wednesday: Watch the youtube video on Newton's 3 Laws. Take notes from PowerPoint of Newton's Laws of Motion. Thursday: Finish PowerPoint notes from Wednesday. When finished, start on a review sheet of Newton's Laws. Friday: Discuss centripetal force. Watch a video discussing Newton's second law in terms of the relationship between position, velocity and acceleration. Watch the Time Warp clip, Face Punch, to demonstrate Newton's third law. Participate in a demonstration of centripetal force. (Needed for this: board, string, cup, water.)
