SPS9. Students will investigate the properties of waves. a. Recognize that all waves transfer energy. b. Relate frequency and wavelength to the energy of different types of electromagnetic waves and mechanical waves. c. Compare and contrast the characteristics of electromagnetic and mechanical (sound) waves. d. Investigate the phenomena of reflection, refraction, interference, and diffraction. e. Relate the speed of sound to different mediums. f. Explain the Doppler Effect in terms of everyday interactions. GMAS Testing this Week Has Resulted in a Varied Schedule for Classes. The plans are as follows. EQ: How can you compare and contrast different types of waves? Monday or Tuesday Review waves from Star Castle Field Trip (transverse, longitudinal, mediums to transfer waves, modeling waves). Watch short video clip about waves and visit website for waves. Answer the following in small group discussion: After viewing the information in science and using the pHet simulation please comment below the following: 1. The difference between transverse and longitudinal waves. 2. What is amplitude? 3. How do you calculate frequency? 4. What are the parts of a wave? (crest, trough, etc.) 5. What are the different mediums that waves may travel? 6. Is light a particle or a wave? Give an example from the class discussion. Wednesday Complete the Wave on a String Lab Thursday Complete the Wave on a String 2 Lab page 1 Friday Using notes from Waves and Electromagnetic Spectrum complete the practice working in small groups.
